ABOUT ME

Well, how did I get here? - David Byrne
I was about 10 years old when my Mom dropped me off to meet some friends at a demolition derby. I had with me her Brownie Hawkeye camera with a fresh roll of 12 exposures. While I had used it before every now and then, this was my first time to use it on my own. I took a couple of shots from high up in the stands when the man seated next to me suggested I wait until after the derby to go down to the track to get better pictures up close. That was my first lesson that "taking a picture" involved more than pushing a button, but I was hooked.

After learning darkroom technique in a photography night class while I was in junior high, to working on the newspaper and yearbook throughout high school, I took a gap year to spend some time perfecting my craft without the pressure of college. That also meant getting a job and without thinking too much about it, I took an entry level position at a local TV station. Next thing I knew, I'd had a 15 year career in television production and I was bored with it.

As fate would have it, I had many friends that had made the transition from television to film production and encouraged me to make the leap to the uncertainty of the freelance world and leave the steady pay and benefits behind. For the next 21 years, I worked as a Video Assist Operator on commercials, music videos, feature films and television programs. My coworkers were talented artists who could turn an empty warehouse into anything that could be dreamed up, and the light makers and light shapers made it look so real that you'd forget where you were in the first place. Every job was a new learning experience.

Eventually the long hours and brutal locations lost their appeal and I made the difficult decision to give all that up and pick back up where I left off with my gap year, but this time with considerably more vision and knowledge.

I hope you enjoy my images as much as I enjoyed making them. I would welcome the opportunity to create something special for you to hang on the wall or promote your interests.
